Hey, me again. Here is another topic that I wrote about for my fiction writing class. Enjoy!
Jedi or Sith: Decisions,Decisions
Are you good or bad? That is the one question all Star Wars fans ask themselves when they watch the films. It is a way we use to “view” the movies in: good guys or bad guys. As strange as it seems to many casual viewers, many fans have a side that they prefer. These
preferences are formed by the novels, characters and games upon are based from the films.
Personally, I’m a light-sider or fan of the good guys. I know a few dark-siders that every time I talk to them, they call me: “Rebel scum ”; but it’s cool, I don’t take it as a put down or anything. Its just what us fans do, we debate on things and characters form the films/novels, and try to sway each other from our “certain point of view”. These are more like inside jokes and not actual fighting words, we all get along but like to goof around like that. I like it and with the addition of the newer films, we have even more stuff to debate about and that’s always good.
I bring this topic up for writing because it is something a think about quite a bit while chatting with other fellow fans. I like to pick peoples brains on this topic ‘cause it’s a cool way to see how that person think’s in relation to the characters in the Star Wars universe. Though I
love the good guys, that doesn’t mean that I don’t like or relate to some of the bad guys as well. One of my favorite characters is Anikin(Skywalker); not just because he becomes one of the greatest bad guys of all-time but because rather I like it or not, his more like me than I’d like to admit. I two have problems with my personal feelings and I some times let them get the best of me like the tragic hero from the films.
I too have my “dark” days and give people the cold shoulder but that’s not who I really am. I’m a nice guy, it’s just that people sometimes get on my nerves and then I have be a jerk to them but not because I’m a bad person. That’s way Vader(Anikin) is so interesting to me; he may bully people around and kill many of his first officers but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a human soul behind the black mask. He too once loved and care for people but those days were long ago, almost like a distant memory; to him that is. After seeing the newer films, I really took a liking to the big guy and found him to be more human than he lets himself off to be with his evil way of treating some people.
Just like how I have my bad days, I have pretty good ones too. Mostly though, I try my best to be like the Jedi; calm, peaceful and try to think outwards, not inwards. I try to be just like one of my favorite characters: Luke Skywalker. He was one of my favorite heros growing up as a kid and I’m still very fond of him to this day. He always thought of others and what he could do for them rather than himself; the true mark of what a hero is and should be.
Now lets break each side down: the darkside is evil but it has its cool parts to it, in so many words. For one, you don’t have to be nice to anyone so if you don’t like someone, just kill them. You don’t have any code to follow like the good guys, you do what you want and don’t
have to answer to anybody but yourself. Also, you get to have really cool powers too: force lightning, force choke, force persuasion; bending other people’s will to your own, etc. Even with all that being said, we all know that the good guys always win; so if you choose to be on the side
of evil, be prepared to lose in the end(always).
Now the darkside is considered the “easier path” mostly because you use your emotions and fear to hurts others. The harder but more powerful answer to that is the lightside, yes the light is more powerful since it focuses on control and patience while the dark focuses on power and fury. The light may not have all the flashiness of the dark but it has more control and focus which if used correctly, gives its user far more power because they are in control of the force around them. When a person uses the darkside, they are giving in to their emotions thus losing much of their control in order to increase their strength. To be honest, even with the pros and cons of both sides, it has been written/debated that they are about equal in power; that is if you look at it from a force-user’s stand point in fighting from the films(it just depends on the fighters that are use the force in a fight).
Now, the light is pretty cool itself. To be on the “path of the light”, means that the force-user is always in a state of neutrality; they try their best to be neither on one side of an argument between people or the other. The path of the light requires the user to use the force, not for
offence but for defense. To use it to mediate through problems and to protect others, not for personal gain. The main powers for this side are: force push, force pull, force speed and force heal.
Now that I have explain what each side can do/is controlled, I hope that have help to understand why some fans lean towards one side or the other. It doesn’t matter which side you like, it just matters that you enjoy the ride of the sage while watching it at home or in a theater. With these ideas and concepts in mind, us fans debate about the outcomes of the fights and events of the films, games and novels. We each have our own opinion on how things should go or should have gone but all-in-all, we have fun in arguing Star Wars with each other. It helps past the time and also helps to answer many questions we may have about the films/novels ourselves. Debating keeps the fun of the story alive and keeps us always thinking about what we love about Star Wars in the first place; a on going struggle between good & evil and who’s better.
